We “live like librarians” as our strong core of volunteers offers “class days” twice a month at the Roosevelt Elementary School Library in the Boston Public School System. During these class days students visit the library one class at a time to listen to a story or two and find a new book to check out to hold them over to next month. We hope and pray Boston Mayor Michelle Wu does indeed make it possible to fund the return of libraries to all Boston Public Schools, but until that day comes we will keep the library alive at The Roosevelt.
Each year during the East Milton Square Halloween Stroll—weather permitting—we host an amazing Trick-or-Treat for Books event on the front lawn of our church. Brand new books are donated and purchased by book lovers in our congregation and volunteers help hundreds of children (as in 200-300!) pick out one new book to add to their treat bag.
We host a Holiday Book Fair, Story & Craft Time each December, partnering with Barefoot Books, a small, independent publisher of “books that open children’s hearts, minds and worlds,” and all sorts of church volunteers. Every child departs with a gift bag filled with a new book, cookies and milk
Our Little Free Library (one of the first two in Milton) continues to be a tremendous gift to our congregation and wider neighborhood and is visited a lot!
